Andalusia tops the list of public healthcare response rates. The number of people waiting for an outpatient consultation has decreased, although the number of patients awaiting surgery has increased.
Following the publication of the latest data on public healthcare waiting lists, Andalusia is the region with the highest number of people waiting to be seen by a specialist (841.731). The average waiting time for a first consultation is 121 days, a number that has increased by 14 days compared to the figures given by the Ministry of Health in June 2022. This growth has also been reflected in the delays in surgical interventions, with Andalusia ranking fourth. Neurosurgery is among the specialties with the longest waiting lists.
As of June 23, 2023, there were 192.561 Andalusians waiting for surgery. This represents an increase of more than 20.000 people compared to December 2022. In June 2022, the waiting list stood at 136.613 patients. Andalusia exceeds the national average, which is 112 days, placing it behind the Canary Islands, Extremadura, and Cantabria in terms of the longest waiting time. If we look at the specialties, 25% of patients take an average of more than six months to undergo surgery. The waiting list for surgery by neurosurgeon averages 215 days, behind plastic surgery (427), and angiology and vascular surgery (224).
Neurosurgery in Malaga, the specialty with the longest delays
The capital's Regional Hospital leads the way in the increase in the number of patients on the list and the average wait time. This has increased by 22,47%, from 89 days in June 2022 to 109 in 2023. Neurosurgery is the specialty with the longest waiting list for a first consultation, with an average of 181 days, which translates to half a year. Data released by the Andalusian Regional Government indicate that 897 Malaga residents are waiting for a diagnosis from a doctor in this specialty.
