Intervention without screws

Not all professionals are trained to use the surgical microscope.. For this reason, they opt for traditional surgery and overlook minimally invasive microsurgery. This is Dr. Mosqueira's signature technique.

"You need plates and screws to fix your back," that medical diagnosis that everyone rejects when they suffer from a spinal condition. At Dr. Mosqueira Clinic, it's presented as the last option. This would be traditional surgery. The reality is that "only a minority of affected patients, and not all" need it. Neurosurgeon Bernardo Mosqueira always opts for the minimally invasive microsurgery, the screwless procedure, except in certain cases. What's the difference? Not all professionals are trained to use a surgical microscope, as it requires a high degree of specialization and/or they share different criteria when indicating a surgical technique.

On many occasions we have spoken about the Benefits of an intervention without screws or plates. They are summarized in a quick recovery and in a lower rate of complicationsNinety-five percent of patients who come to Dr. Mosqueira Clinic benefit from this technique, minimally invasive microsurgery. The remaining small percentage would be exceptional cases due to a larger, more complex problem that cannot be addressed without fixation (even if it is minimal).

Benefits of screwless surgery

People suffering from herniated discs or spinal stenosis, both in the lumbar and cervical regions, are the main beneficiaries of this technique, recovering their quality of life in record time. When it comes to highlighting the advantages of plate- and screw-free microsurgery compared to the risks of traditional fixation surgery, we find a high success rate, rapid recovery (generally discharged in less than 24 hours), shorter operating time (generally less than an hour in the operating room), and a small incision of just 3-4 centimeters.

In this sense, the risk of infection is reduced by the absence of a noticeable wound, which always carries the possibility of fibrosis; and muscle atrophy caused by fixation, which restricts mobility, is avoided. "My opinion is that the patient, when diagnosed with requiring surgery with plates and screws, should look for a second option in case there is a possibility of minimally invasive microsurgery," says the neurosurgeon, who describes himself as "anti-screw."
