These two pathologies celebrated their International Day on May 12th. More than a million people in our country suffer from one of them, experiencing intense muscle pain and severe fatigue that doesn't go away with rest and makes it impossible to enjoy everyday life.

May 12th commemorates the International Fibromyalgia Day and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with the aim of raising awareness among the population about these diseases, which affect between 3% and 6% of the world's population. To date there is no concrete medical explanation., neither for one nor the other, that is, there is no direct cure. If we focus on the first, fibromyalgia presents a series of symptoms that begin with the presence of muscle pain and discomfort in fibrous tissue, such as ligaments and tendons. They can affect all regions of the body. Fibromyalgia was recognized as a disease by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1992.

According to the World Fibromyalgia Association and the Spanish Society of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (SEFIFAC), around 6,3% of the world's population suffers from this disorder, a number that has remained stable in recent years, while in Spain it affects 2,4%. diagnosis is often complicated since people who have this pathology suffer different ailments that are assimilated with those of othersRheumatologists are usually responsible for treating it, but there's no diagnosis that can eradicate it at its root: drugs, treatment, and a healthy lifestyle can help improve it.

Why do both celebrate their international day togetherThey are related and often go hand in hand. This chronic disease is characterized by Generalized musculoskeletal pain is associated with chronic fatigue. People who suffer from this type of problems experience intense and generalized fatigue, even depression and anxiety, in other words, listlessness and lack of strength to face the routine. The Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases (FEDER) indicates that this disorder can become so severe that it forces us to reduce daily activities by 50%. Our body experiences persistent or excessive exhaustion, turning into a disorder called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), without being directly caused by other pre-existing pathologies.

symptom relief

Current treatment is aimed at reducing and controlling symptoms and consists of the administration of drugs to reduce painCognitive-behavioral therapy, physical exercise, rehabilitation, and physiotherapy may also be part of the therapeutic process. Aerobic exercise, educational programs, relaxation exercises, therapies to promote an active attitude in patients, and mutual support groups and social networks may also be part of the therapeutic process.

What has become clear over the years and with the research carried out is that there are specific symptoms such as Severe fatigue that does not improve with rest, worsening/discomfort after physical or mental activity, and difficulty sleeping. It's important to be careful, as these health problems can overlap with other illnesses that exhibit similar symptoms. Therefore, identifying fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome requires various medical tests for an accurate diagnosis.
